Sudden Deaths and Inquests, 1869–1870
In Bega, on 7 July 1869, Henry Alfred Jones died from the effects of poison, though it was never established how it had been administered or by whom. The inquest was overseen by B. I. Wetherell.
At Callitina, Samuel Jones succumbed to burns received while in an epileptic fit. His death occurred on 26 October 1869, and the inquiry was conducted by W. H. Thornton.
Not long before, on 16 October 1869, William Jones of Penrith died of natural causes, the inquiry undertaken by George Thomas Clarke.
In Berrowa, Samuel Jordan, also known as Wilding, fell from his dray while under the influence of drink. His death on 13 May 1869 was investigated by J. N. Ryan.
On 28 May 1869, Edward San Juste of Sydney took his own life while suffering from temporary insanity. Henry Shiel presided over the inquest.
George Kearney of Bathurst was run over accidentally by a dray and died from his injuries on 11 November 1869. J. M. Marsh P.M. conducted the inquiry.
At Young, Daniel Kelly drowned on 30 September 1869, having been intoxicated at the time. The coroner was G. O’M. Clarke.
Grace Hannah Kelly, a child of Racecourse Creek, died of diarrhoea on 24 February 1870. The inquiry was held by Charles Whalan J.P..
Also at the beginning of 1870, on 21 February, Luke Kelly of Orange died of concussion of the brain, the matter inquired into by J. T. Lane.
In Sydney, on 21 May 1869, Mary Kendrick committed suicide while suffering from insanity. The coroner was Captain Scott.
At Albury, Patrick Kenna died of natural causes on 6 March 1870, the inquiry conducted by M. F. Brownrigg.
Anne Kettle of Newtown likewise died of natural causes on 28 February 1870. The inquiry was led by Henry Shiell.
A tragic family accident occurred at Sandy Creek on 12 November 1869, when John Hudson Keys was accidentally shot by a pistol fired by his brother, Richard Keys. The case was overseen by Edward White J.P.
At Rylstone, Edward Albert King drowned accidentally on 25 October 1869. W. W. Armstrong J.P. presided over the inquiry.
Thomas Knott of Guntawang was accidentally crushed to death against a tree by a dray on 19 November 1869. W. King was the magistrate.
At Boggobri, Patrick Lahey lost his life in an incident where Hy. Strutton was charged with manslaughter. The jury found Strutton did not intend to kill the deceased. The coroner was T. K. Abbott. The date of death was 12 March 1870.
John Lamperes of Wagga Wagga died of inflammation of the lungs on 27 January 1870. The inquiry was by Henry Baylis.
William Langthorne of Berrumbed died from general debility on 3 October 1869, with R. C. Robinson presiding.
At Walcha, Michael Lappin died of apoplexy on 26 January 1870. The inquiry was conducted by C. W. Adams.
William Patrick Leonard of Maitland West was accidentally killed on 10 March 1870, the coroner being J. Smith P.M.
Two separate entries record the death of Robert Linn. One, at Camden, occurred on 23 April 1869, noted simply as an accidental death, the coroner E. Palmer. A second record places his death at Mulgoa Forest on the same day, also presided over by Edward Palmer.
Henry Kent Lloyd of Canberra drowned accidentally on 6 September 1869. A. Morton held the inquest.
On 11 February 1870, Chas. Simpson John Lowe of Stroud died after taking morphia with spirits. The coroner was Thomas Nicholas.
In Sydney, William Lumsden died of apoplexy on 17 March 1870. Henry Shiell conducted the inquest.
Finally, at Wentworth, Richard Lynch was accidentally killed by a horse on 28 February 1870. Wm. L. Richardson J.P. presided over the inquiry.
