‘The sky is brass and the scrub-lands glare,
Death and ruin are everywhere;
Thrown high to bleach, or deep in the mud
The bones lie buried by last year’s flood,
And the Demons dance from the Never Never
To laugh at the rise of the Darling River.’

The Song of the Darling

Henry Lawson

BOURKE. This township, nearly in the centre of the Australian continent on the river Darling, 576 miles from Sydney, is not unlikely ‘to become a place of great importance at no distant period. It will be connected commercially with Queensland, South Australia, and the Gulf of Carpentaria.                                                    Source: Extract from Samson PO Directory 1867.

One thought on “NSW Residents Vol. 3. – Bourke Residents

  1. I came across the small entry about Franz Harder in the list. I think this is my grandfather. The Harder (or correctly Harders) family came to Bourke to work as a wheelwright or blacksmith. I’m not sure exactly when but 1880’s. His name was Ernst Harders. Their daughter Marie Elizabeth seems to have been a pupil teacher in the late 1890’s and later taught languages at Fort st Girls High school in Sydney. I would love more concrete information about my great grandparents time in Bourke.
    Thankyou for the research you do for cuious amateurs like me.
